EHS and sustainability

At Constellium, sustainability entails consistently delivering the highest value to our stakeholders. This includes attaining our goal of zero work-related incidents, injuries and occupational illnesses, while reducing our environmental footprint.

Putting EHS first

Constellium’s vision is to be best-in-class in EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) across all operations and business activities. EHS FIRST is a combination of management system and mindset that empowers us to place EHS at the heart of our management, decision‑making and industrial processes.

A commitment from everyone

The system helps us forge a strong EHS culture and proactive mindset, focused on constantly improving our EHS awareness, skills, leadership and results. It applies to all activities, including operations, research facilities, warehouses and office locations. Furthermore, it represents a personal commitment by all of us to be accountable for ensuring the safety of ourselves, our co-workers, contractors and visitors.

Health and safety

Year over year, our recordable case rate continues to improve, along with leading safety indicators such as the frequency and quality of shop-floor observations by management, and near miss and hazard reporting. Beginning in 2010, we raised the bar by including all external contractors and visitors in our safety performance.

Our track record over the past years is very visible, for example our Extrusions and Automotive Structures business unit has reached an industry best accident rate for the third consecutive year. However, we continuously challenge our standards and performance and set specific initiatives to further reduce our risk level.

In 2013, the aluminium industry will be integrated into the European Union (EU) Emission Allowance Trading System. The EU’s ambitious emission reduction plan will take effect in 2020.

These regulations present an opportunity for Constellium to continue creating new technology and innovative processes that prevent and minimize adverse environmental impact including waste, emissions and discharges. We look forward to helping our customers do likewise.

Constellium operates within the European Union’s Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) framework. REACH is implemented in a coordinated effort across the company, also involving customers and suppliers.

Certifications

EHS FIRST requires that all sites owned at least 50% by Constellium are certified according to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Product stewardship and sustainable solutions

Today’s skyrocketing energy costs are compelling every company to reduce energy consumption. Our comprehensive approach to product stewardship enables us to address the complete life cycle of solutions, including all environmental, social and economic implications.

Our aerospace, automotive, rail and marine transport solutions provide tangible economic, environmental and social advantages to customers, end-users and society in general. Design improvements serve to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, while enhancing passenger safety and comfort.

Constellium is also involved in certain humanitarian projects that bring sustainable living solutions to those most in need. In 2007, we donated and delivered several solar cookers created from products made by our rolling mill in Singen (Germany) for an expedition called Humanitrek that aimed to improve living conditions in an area lacking in energy sources in Nepal. Constellium’s solar cookers provided an efficient way for entire communities to cook and heat water without the need for fossil fuels.

The positive reaction to this first project led Humanitrek to organize a second project in 2010, to Zanskar in the Himalayan region of Northern India. Constellium chose to support this by donating and transporting another set of solar cookers.

Recyclable and renewable

Constellium conducts extensive recycling to reduce resource consumption in our packaging and consumer goods applications and operations. We are helping advance the renewable energy market through solutions such as our special surfaces for solar technology applications and extrusions for wind turbines.
