Aluminium is now being used to produce molds for the injection molding industry, a technological leap forward. Constellium’s ALUMOLD®  offer is currently the driving force behind efficiency, responsiveness and profitability in the sector.

ALUMOLD®  has excellent machining characteristics and is easy to polish. This reduces the time needed to produce molds and their cost.

As an added advantage, ALUMOLD®  has far greater thermal conductivity than steel. This reduces lead times, optimizes productivity and improves the quality of end products.

ALUMOLD®  applications and characteristics

The ALUMOLD®  range features a variety of products suited to different applications.

Alumold 500/Certal SPC

Alumold 500/Certal SPC products are designed for applications where high strength is required for the mold. These alloys are specifically for thermoplastic injection molds for medium to large series (300,000 shots or more).

This product is also suitable for blow molds, which require high resistance of the parting line and/or the knives.

Material characteristics are as follows:

  •  
    7,000 series (Al–Mg–Zn)
  •  
    High-strength materials: TYS = 460 – 540 MPa
  •  
    Good property homogeneity throughout the thickness
  •  
    Very good shape stability
  •  
    Age-hardened and stress-relieved
  •  
    Rolled (up to 300 mm) or forged products depending on the thickness
  •  
    Thickness of up to 700 mm
  •  
    Maximum service temperature of 110°C (temperature of mold, not of plastic)

Alumold® 350/Tempral

The ALUMOLD® 350/Tempral products are designed for high-temperature applications with a possible continuous service temperature up to 180°C.

These alloys are dedicated to processes such as rubber molding, reactive molding, aseptic blow molding or composite material forming.

Material characteristics are as follows:

    2,000 series (Al–Cu)
  •  
    Medium-strength materials: TYS = 310 - 370 MPa
  •  
    Excellent shape stability
  •  
    Age-hardened and stress-relieved
  •  
    Rolled products
  •  
    Thickness of up to 300 mm
  •  
    Maximum service temperature: 180°C (temperature of mold, not of plastic)

Alumold® 110/Fibral

Alumold® 110/Fibral are designed for applications involving low amounts of pressure and stress. These alloys are specifically for thermoforming, foaming, composite materials forming and injection molds for prototypes and small runs.

Material characteristics are as follows:

  •  
    5,000 series (Al–Mg)
  •  
    Low-strength materials: TYS = 115 MPa
  •  
    Cast products
  •  
    Thickness of up to 800 mm
  •  
    Maximum service temperature: 200°C (temperature of mold, not of plastic)
