Sealium® applications

Created and patented by Constellium, Sealium® optimises the overall productivity of shipbuilders and the performance of vessels in general as it makes them more robust, safer, and user-friendly.

Over the years, Sealium® became an international industry reference for fast ferries.

After a comprehensive research and development program in the group laboratories, and close cooperation with shipyards, designers and certification societies, Constellium created a new alloy that pushed back further the limits of the oceans. Over and above the challenges related to Sealium® manufacturing, shaping and welding, our top priority was to develop the properties essential at sea such as toughness, strength and resistance to corrosion and fatigue. Sealium®  is always ready for new challenges.

Outstanding performance

The main property of Sealium® is that it is significantly stronger than other alloys commonly used in shipbuilding (minimum 15%). Consequential weight savings are of prime importance to designers and manufacturers of longer vessels in order to meet the ocean’s challenges.

Unique resistance to corrosion

Sealium® is protected by a thick layer of aluminium oxide which is why it has much better corrosion resistance than steel (which requires priming and expensive maintenance to try to achieve the same level of performance). Sealium®’s resistance to corrosion is excellent even after several years of use. Rigorous tests regularly demonstrate this excellence.

Higher resistance to fatigue

Sealium®'s fatigue resistance before and after welding is higher than  previous generations of aluminium alloys, a guarantee of safety and long service life, even on the longest vessels. Furthermore, Sealium®'s  specific resistance to impact when compared to other materials makes it the material of choice for a large number of shipbuildings.

Quicker work-up

Sealium® is much more flexible and easy to use than steel. Cutting, shaping and bending operations are much simpler. The limits imposed on designers by technology are pushed back, leaving more space for untrammelled imagination and creativity - and the total satisfaction of crews. Any adjustments needed to meet revised customer specifications - and their egitimate desire to have exclusive models – are easy to implement.

Much lighter than steel, Sealium® significantly improves sailing performances. It is a very strong metal which has already enabled the construction of ships over 100 metres in length. Despite all these benefits, usage and induced manufacturing costs remain extremely competitive.
