In the 1970s, Constellium pioneered the process of hybrid aluminium‑steel co-extrusion that is used to manufacture the power rails through which electricity flows to underground and suburban train systems.
A global leader in conductor rails manufacturing
Today, electricity is transported from traction power sub-stations to rolling stock via power rails. Electrical current is then transferred through a metal contact block under the train (known as “shoes”) which presses on the surface of the contact rail. We provide power rails for top-running, lateral and under-running systems as well as rigid catenaries.
Together with our joint venture partner Railtech International, we design, manufacture, test and supply conductor rails. The joint venture responsible for global sales and marketing of our products is named Railtech-Alu-Singen.
We also offer optional services including layout planning, training in installation and on-site supervision.
The world’s first electric underground railway, the City and South London Railway, which opened in England in 1890, received electricity from a power rail system.
