As a Sustainability Roadmap target, all major new innovation projects will be designed with a Life Cycle Assessment of the product’s environmental impact. This holistic examination of the life cycle includes the assessment of raw-material production, manufacturing, distribution, use, disposal and end-of-life recycling, as well as all the intervening transportation and distribution stages that are either required or caused by the product’s existence. A good illustration of the larger picture offered by Life Cycle Assessment is found in the wider use of aluminium in the automotive industry, specifically by decreasing the weight of car bodies.
