INTERNSHIP - Electrochemistry / Chemistry Engineer Student (all genders)
Constellium is a world leader in the development and manufacture of high value-added aluminum products and solutions for a wide range of markets and applications, focusing in particular on aerospace, automotive and packaging. Constellium also has nearly 12,000 employees worldwide. We are committed to minimizing the environmental impact of our operations and improving the life cycle footprint of aluminum throughout the value chain.
In our company, safety is essential, it is one of our core values without compromise. Our Research and Technology Center, C-TEC Constellium Technology Center, based in Grenoble (Voreppe – 38) employs about 240 people.
By joining our company, you will discover a multicultural company (over 20 nationalities) which is committed to diversity and the well-being of its employees.
In the context of a 6-month internship, C-TEC is recruiting an engineer intern in the field of electrochemistry / chemistry and/or materials science to work on the following subject : Use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to evaluate the influence of aggressive beverage on can coatings
Responsabilities :
As part of the monitoring of legislation on food contact, Constellium is testing different BPANi interior varnishes for beverage can lids in order to qualify them industrially. The customer carries out long tests with real food containers (packtests) on lids.
The aim is to study the difference in performance using aggressive simulant to establish a ranking between different coatings (A: the standard coating, B: coating 1 in qualification, C: coating 2 in qualification), to also use this test to assess the suitability of the coating with the surface treatment (several conversion treatments could be evaluated for this) and to evaluate the alloy effect (5182 vs. more recyclable alloys).
The project has several components:
- Masterize the different coating systems to be studied, and customer tests. The most relevant tests will be used as a reference for ranking the coating systems.
- Choosing a suitable test environment for carrying out electrochemical impedance measurements with the C-TEC device on all the coating systems to be tested, while minimizing bias.
- Collect static and/or dynamic data on the various systems, followed by an initial qualitative analysis to produce an overall ranking of the various systems.
- Carry out an in-depth analysis of the data in order to gain a better understanding of the degradation mechanisms involved and the specific characteristics of each coated system tested.
The trainee's role will be, after an initial training phase in our businesses and tools, to design experimental plans with the help of the team, carry them out in the laboratory and summarize them with the help of the team.
Profile :
Education level: 5 years' higher education
Electrochemistry-Chemistry-Materials Science
Competencies & technical & soft skills requirement:
- Theoretical knowledge of electrochemistry, chemistry and/or corrosion
- Good computer skills: Excel,
- Basic knowledge of data processing (Matlab, Python) will be a plus
