Alcan Cable Plant Recognized for Participation in Pacific Power’s Blue Sky Program
Alcan Cable, a Division of Rio Tinto Alcan Engineered Products, was recently recognized for their Roseburg, Oregon plant’s participation in Pacific Power’s wind energy generation program known as Blue Sky. As a Large Business customer and Blue Sky Champion Partner, the Roseburg plant offsets their power usage by purchasing wind mill generated power for the operation of their manufacturing facility.
“We feel that this partnership is directly linked to one of Rio Tinto Alcan’s guiding Health Safety and Environment principals – reduce our environmental footprint by continually improving the efficiency of our natural resource consumption,” said Sean Milner, Roseburg Plant Manager, Alcan Cable. “We are proud to be a part of this green power solution for the future.”
Pacific Power President, Patrick Reiten, and VP of Customer and Community Affairs, Pat Egan, presented a plaque to Alcan Cable, Roseburg management during a visit to the site on May 12, 2008,
The strong support of Pacific Power customers has led to the Blue Sky program being named the national 2007 Green Power Program of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The National Renewable energy laboratory ranks Blue Sky third or better in the nation for the fourth consecutive year in the number of customers buying renewable power and for renewable power sales volume for 2007. The program is Green-e Energy Certified, which means the renewable energy supported meets the rigorous national environmental and consumer-protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions. More than 33,600 customers in the Northwest are part of Blue Sky.
In addition to their role as a consumer of wind power, Alcan Cable manufactures wind farm cable, Zephyr2000™ cable, which transfers the generated power to the step-up transformer in wind mill power applications. Alcan Cable also manufactures aluminum bare overhead cable, low voltage insulated service cable and building wire products for the utility, residential and commercial construction markets. As a recognized supplier of wire and cable to the Pacific Northwest and Western U.S., the Roseburg facility is responsive to the needs of its many customers, which include public power, electrical distributors and investor owned utilities.
