100 years of Alu: united in tradition and innovation
This press info is released jointly with Amcor and 3A Composites.
Exactly 100 years ago, the Swiss company Dr. Lauber, Neher & Cie. founded the subsidiary company “Dr. Lauber, Neher Co. GmbH” in Singen, Germany, in a location which at that time was outside the gates of the city. The company has been locally referred to since then as "The Alu". On the occasion of this centenary, the companies operating on site today – Constellium Singen GmbH, Amcor Flexibles Singen GmbH and 3A Composites GmbH – have joined forces to celebrate this key date in the plant history by opening an exhibition of historical photographs.
Under the motto "100 years of Alu: united in tradition and innovation", the three companies look back together on an eventful history. Starting out as aluminium rolling mills, "The Alu" quickly developed into one of the most important operations for aluminium processing. The three companies are leaders in their respective markets and are highly reputed for their core competencies. Around 3,000 employees from those three companies work in the plant today.
Constellium in Singen, with its wide-ranging products, influenced the aluminium industry right from the start, and has continued to do so not only locally, but internationally for many decades.
The business units Specialty Sheet, Extrusions and Automotive Structures reflect with their products the focus of this ‘Alu’ company: the Specialty Sheet rolling mill division is considered global market leader in the fields of closure sheets and functional/high-gloss surfaces for the lighting, solar and cosmetics industries. The Extrusions and Automotive Structures division leads the European market in large-size profiles (e.g. rail vehicles) and plays an important role in the automotive industry (e.g. in car safety systems).
‘We are very proud of our employees’ know-how, which enables us to reach enviable positions in the market,’ declares Dr. Carsten Rink, Chairman of the Management Board, Constellium Singen GmbH.
Creative ideas and cross-border co-operation have been the mark of the entrepreneurial activities in the "Alu" from the beginning. Aluminium foil, originally intended by the company founders to be used for sealing balloon casings, very soon discovered its industrial application as packaging material, e.g. for chocolate or stock cubes. 'Aluminium-based packaging is still state-of-the-art as aluminium foil is unbeatable when it comes to reliable protection for sensitive foods or medicines,' explained Jean-Marie Bouzendorffer, who is General Manager of Amcor Flexibles Singen GmbH. The company is operating one of Europe‘s largest aluminium foil rolling plants and specializes in the manufacturing and converting of aluminium foils to pharmaceutical and food packaging as well as technical applications.
