PRIMARY FUNCTION: To layout scribe, cut and form materials and to assemble these materials by various joining techniques as riveting, brazing, soldering, mig and tig welding or plasma processes in the fabrication of new repairs or existing plant equipment and structures and to forge, shape, straighten, heat treat metal, parts tools or materials for the plant.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Heating furnaces, forging hammers, quenching equipment, iron workers, anvils, shear, punch, brake, press, welders of various kinds, burners, solders, bending grinders, clamps, power trucks, various types of burning equipment, all common hand and power tools, forming tools, etc.

 

MATERIALS HANDLED: Various ferrous and non-ferrous metal in any form, pipes, tools, fabrications, fastenings, wood, oil, solvents, weld rod, weld wire, fluxes, quenching mediums, various forgings, etc.

 

WORKING PROCEDURE:

 

  1. Completes required records, reports, requisitions, surveys, time cards, etc.
  2. Perform minor duties that are incidental to their primary job even though those duties are also performed by other classifications.
  3. Operates power truck, man lift, mobile equipment and cranes in performance of job.
  4. Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, charts and sketches.
  5. Plans work details, determines material and tool requirements.
  6. Uses stores catalog and/or requisition materials and transport to work area.
  7. Repairs tools common to the classification.
  8. Makes inspections, repairs and installations incidental to his job.
  9. Lays out, marks, scribes, shears, saws, forms and assembles material including difficult development of such parts as transition pieces, tangents and intersections.
  10. Uses various machines and tools to cut and form pieces to required dimensions, burns, tack welds, solders, rolls or rivets seams, reinforces parts as necessary, installs parts of fabricated assemblies, makes repairs to materials, tools and equipment.
  11. Straightens and reworks tools and equipment such as guards, shafts, machine parts, etc.
  12. Makes field sketches and measurements as necessary.
  13. Regulates flow of oxygen and gas to acetylene welding equipment and flow of current for electric welding equipment.
  14. Perform welding, brazing, soldering or cutting work required.
  15. Uses torch to bend, straighten, anneal and temper materials.
  16. Operates automatic burning machine.
  17. Transports and hooks up welding equipment to and from job.
  18. Reconditions tools and equipment used by maintenance or operations such as repointing, sharpening and tempering chisels, crowbars, drill bits, star drills, pinch bars, and reworking casting furnace and pot room tools, pot shell, deck plates, floor plates and beams.
  19. Fabricates equipment and machine parts, tools and/or component parts of tools as required by maintenance or operating departments, such as chisels, punches, jigs, siphon clamps, pipe hangers, etc.
  20. Ignites and feeds forge or furnace fires as necessary.
  21. Keeps equipment, work area and lunchroom in a clean and orderly condition.
  22. Perform miscellaneous painting in their work area.
