With well over 200 talented and highly qualified employees, our C-TEC Technology Center is the driving force behind Constellium’s innovation and long-term growth. Based in Voreppe, France, this experienced team has been responsible for numerous innovations across the automotive, aerospace, packaging, transportation, defense, and industrial markets.

In 2016, we added to our innovation resources with the opening of a new R&T hub in the US  and Constellium’s University Technology Center at Brunel University London.

Our Facilities: C-TEC & Plymouth Hub

Constellium’s leadership in innovation starts with our world-renowned Constellium Technology Center, or C-TEC, with its main location in Voreppe, France, and a new hub in Plymouth, MI, U.S.

The Voreppe location is the largest R&D center in Western Europe working on aluminium and its alloys. It first opened in 1967 and in 2003 became part of Alcan Engineered Products, renamed Constellium in 2011.

We opened the Plymouth site in 2016 to support our growth in North America, expand our connections with academia, and help us meet the needs of the automotive industry in nearby Detroit.

Our international, multidisciplinary team of more than 200 engineers and technicians, including nearly 60 PhDs, benefit from the latest scientific hardware, prototyping capability, and modeling technology. With 190 active patent families and trademarks, we develop lightweight aluminium products, co-create solutions with customers, and provide technological and analytical services. We also partner with a network of first-rate laboratories and universities around the world.

Constellium UTC Brunel

In 2016 we inaugurated Constellium’s University Technology Center (UTC) at Brunel University London, dedicated to the design, development, and prototyping of aluminium alloys and automotive structural components.

In our industry, rapid time-to-market is critical, helping customers incorporate new solutions into their finished products at speed for competitive advantage. The UTC allows us to prototype alloys and components on full-scale equipment, reducing development times by at least 50% so that our automotive customers can take products to market in record time.

Working with Brunel University London and Jaguar Land Rover, we also launched the “Advanced Metal Casting Centre” (AMCC), a research facility developing lightweight, high-performance aluminium alloys for the automotive and rail industries. We are expanding it with an “Advanced Metal Processing Centre” (AMPC) for fabrication and testing of aluminium automotive structural components. Ultimately, we will be able to provide rapid prototyping capability from alloy development to full component manufacture in a single location.

These initiatives are strengthening our presence in the global automotive market for advanced aluminium extruded and Body-in-White rolled products.

And to foster the development of tomorrow’s scientists and engineers, Constellium is partnering with Brunel University London with a fellowship program for PhD students and post-doctorates.

Our competencies

Our 200-plus engineers and technicians are highly qualified and experienced. They represent 20 different nationalities and a wide range of skills and backgrounds. Nearly one-third of them have PhDs.

The C-TEC team can take credit for many of the discoveries in the aluminium industry that are creating new opportunities in markets from aerospace to packaging, automotive, defense, and industry.
