Aluminium is a sustainable material for the automotive industry because it reduces vehicle weight by as much as 40% when compared to steel, significantly lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions during the usage phase. Aluminium is a natural choice for electric vehicles, for which lower weight means greater autonomy. As an example, the use of aluminium for battery enclosures contributes to electro mobility.
At Constellium, we use life-cycle-assessments (LCA) and end-of-life (EoL) recycling rate to evaluate the environmental footprint of our products. This is consistent with our vision of improving the entire life cycle performance through an increased EoL recycling rate, rather than striving to include an intrinsically limited amount of recycled content.

Another key tool is the Material Flow analysis which enables us to identify the areas of improvement:
- Increasing collection and sorting
- Creating closer recycling loops
- Developing high industry standards
Constellium is also a founding partner of the IRT M2P program with the French government to promote technology transfer from universities to industry. Among other aspects, this institute aims to improve recycling through better knowledge of recycling and sorting processes and material flows.
